It’s a new year and what a fantastic start I’ve had. Last year at some point I entered the RWA (Romance Writers Australia) Ripping Start competition. Judging is based on the first 1500 words of the manuscript.
This is why I love it so much. It lets you know if you’re on the right track before you get too far in. Nothing worse than writing a 100,000-word manuscript only to find out it has major problems right from the beginning.
As I said, I’m a big fan of the competition so I polished up the beginning of my manuscript and sent it in. Imagine my surprise when saw I’d come first place. I was absolutely delighted. Especially because I was really loving the story so far. I usually have this weird writers curse that prevents me from looking at my manuscript and telling if it’s any good or not.
In fact, usually, if I’m hating something I’m writing, everyone else loves it. All the writing I love and convince myself this is the manuscript that I’ll get published with, turns out that people don’t like. I’m so in love with my current WIP so I was thrilled to find out that others were too.
I’d also like to congratulate everyone else that entered. As usual, the competition was tough. These romance writers don’t mess around and they write really well. And it’s terrifying putting your work out there for others to judge and pick apart. So well done everyone for your skill and bravery.
And a huge thank you to the judges for taking time out of their lives to voluntarily read numerous entries. You guys rock!
